Neuromodulation

General Information

Bladder control problems prevent people from controlling when and how much they urinate. These problems can make simple, everyday activities a challenge and social lives very difficult. You may leak small or large volumes of urine, you may use the bathroom very frequently, or you may not be able to completely empty your bladder. The range of symptoms can be broad, but they all interfere with your life and can result in embarrassment and frustration. The implantable Neuromodulation System uses mild electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves that influence the behavior of the bladder, sphincter, and pelvic floor muscles. In properly selected patients, Neuromodulation can dramatically reduce or eliminate symptoms

Urinary Control is indicated for the treatment of urinary retention and the symptoms of overactive bladder, including urinary urge incontinence and significant symptoms of urgency-frequency alone or in combination, in patients who have failed or could not tolerate more conservative treatments.

Neuromodulation uses a small device to send mild electrical pulses to a nerve located in the lower back (just above the tailbone). This nerve, called the sacral nerve, influences the bladder and surrounding muscles that manage urinary function. The electrical stimulation may eliminate or reduce certain bladder control symptoms in some people. The system is surgically placed under the skin. Our physicians implant both FDA approved systems Axonics and Interstim.

Important Note

After receiving Neuromodulation, it is very important for you to follow your doctor’s instructions. You will need to visit your doctor or nurse to program your neurostimulator to the correct settings. Your doctor will probably set up a schedule of regular visits as needed. You will be given an identification card that has information about your system and identifies your doctor. It is a good idea to carry this card with you at all times. Above all, follow your doctor’s advice and follow all warnings and precautions instructions.
